Quote for the day - Monday

We are so obsessed with doing that we have no time and no imagination left for being. As a result, men are valued not for what they are but for what they do or what they have - for their usefulness.

The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge and our Feliz Navidad Dinner

This evening, we continued a 12 year tradition of our Feliz Navidad dinner where we go out to a nice Mexican Dinner.

We went to our favorite Mexican Restaurant, Toreros in Renton.  We had a great time with our family.  The owner, Ted Rodriguez has been serving some of the best Mexican food for 30 years.  As an aside, Mr. Rodriguez serves as a Deacon in a local church.  He's one of the nicest, most caring people I have ever known.

After we ate, we had some time before the show, so we went over to the SBC aka; Seattle's Best Coffee.  I have always liked their espresso and they seem to have better handle on the Christmas merchandising then so many other coffee chains.  Hard to believe that they are owned by Starbuck's, who don't do the Christmas Spirit half as well, IMHO.

Then it was Showtime.  The play was a comedy called "The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge". A new production by the Renton Civic Theatre.  This is the second production we have seen at this theatre it was top notch, like the last.  We all agreed that it was a great show. It was fun, hilarious, original and they paid attention to the details.  I loved the juxtaposition they used with two other characters, to Scrooge and Bob Cratchit. - I won't delve into that too much but I'll give you the synopsis from their website:

The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge
By Mark Brown
December 4th – 19th 2009

The Trial of the Century! A year after his miraculous transformation, Ebenezer Scrooge is back to his old ways and is suing Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future for breaking and entering, kidnapping, slander, pain and suffering, attempted murder and the intentional infliction of emotional distress. One by one, Bob Cratchit, Scrooge's nephew Fred, solicitor and philanthropist Sara Anne Wainwright, and the ghosts themselves take the witness stand to give their account of that famous night.  "A delightful new holiday tradition" - Talkin' Broadway. "A sequel worthy of Dickens' approval" - The Seattle Times.  Bill Huls, RCT's Artistic Director, will direct this soon to be Christmas classic.

It was so good I'm thinking seriously about going back to see it one more time before Christmas.  I recommend this play to everyone.  J wants us to purchase season tickets next season.  I will think about it.

I think it's important to support our small local theater groups right now.  In this tough economy, it's one of the best entertainment values.  Much better than the CRAP coming out of Hollywood these days.  So much more fulfilling to get your culture on.

As another aside, RCT is on a mission to complete the purchase of thier theater building.  They received a grant from 4Culture for $50k and they used it to pay down their mortgage.  That inspired their "Burn The Mortgage" fund raising campaign.  I purchased some raffle tickets to help them out.

Check it out and Merry Christmas!

Thoughts on the Dachshund

A perfectly wonderful thought on my dog, Vito.  If you know and love a Doxie, you know this to be true.

"The Dachshund's affectionate, He wants to wed with you: Lie down to sleep, And he's in bed with you.  Sit in a chair, He's there.  Depart, you break his heart"

-- E. B. White

Here's to you my best friend.

Lakewood Cop Killer Aftermath = Typical and Surreal

The people that helped this person do his dirty work also deserve everything they will get.  I was mortified to find out that they were hiding out, not 5 minutes from my house.  It's no wonder that my spidey sense was tingling that night.  I see they all have nice orange jumpsuits on my TV.  The killer's cell mate allegedly doesn't have a clue why he's there in front of a judge.  Really? Are you serious?  Some people are trying so hard to be smart, that they become dumber than a bag of hammers.

I won't say this person's name.  I'm reading now that some  jackass placed a picture of this P.O.S., full of bullet holes, on TwitPic.  What the hell were they thinking??  I don't agree with it and I guess that person is going to have to answer some questions downtown.

This just in - watching the news the family of this loser wants to have nice memorial for the killer. How Sweet.  It's a free country.  The niece was also mortified that the corpse ended up on the interweb.  Yeah it's shocking.  No he wasn't a hero.  Keep your family business to yourself because I don't want to hear about it.  I don't really care how you choose to remember someone who was such scum.  Don't turn this whole tragedy into your little 5 minutes of fame and try to paint the killer as a hero because he was not.

Now the aunt is griping because the cops tore up her house when trying to flush them out.  Too Bad!  If you knew he was starting to show signs of mental illness, then YOU should have tried to get him help.  The fact that it left your house in such a state is sad, yes, but it's NOT on the police, it's on YOU, for not doing something to help prevent what happened on Sunday.

I'm sick and tired of this victim mentality - that deliberately and intentionally tries to take the limelight and focus away from the REAL victims of this tragedy.  The families and friends of the 4 Police Officers Killed in deliberate cold blood, on Sunday.  This was done by a deranged monster that planned and schemed it along with his "homies", who willfully aided and abetted in this effort.  From what I hear the killer didn't hold a gun to their heads.

This whole thing has become so surreal I can bear it no more.

What I'm thankful for this year.

I started a tradition a few years ago of posting a list of things that I'm thankful for.  While I try to keep this list in the forefront of my mind, it's nice to make an intention to put it down and share it with you all.

  1. My Health, which continues to be good.
  2. My wife,  who continues to stick with me.  She always balances me out in all things.
  3. My son.  He is growing into a young man that I am proud of.  His depth of talent amazes me.
  4. My dog, Vito.  A more loyal dog could not be found.  He's so smart and we have grown close in the last year.
  5. My work has picked up, and I'm learning to work on new systems.
  6. Our house and the ability to make the repairs it's needed over the last year.
  7. The new hot water heater "Now 20% bigger!"
  8. My new scooter.
  9. Our car that hasn't had a major breakdown.
  10. The gift of simplicity.  Getting rid of stuff we no longer need.
  11. Tai-Chi and Chi Kung.
  12. Music and my uke.
  13. Gaming time.
  14. My writing muse.
  15. Time to work on the books.
  16. My notebooks, pencils and a great sharpener
  17. My Moka Pot
  18. Coffee
  19. Knowing how to make great things to eat
  20. St. Pauli Girl N.A.
  21. Losing 15 pounds
  22. Having the extra time this last year for serious soul searching.  I wish I felt closer to some answers, but I guess I should feel grateful for more questions?

Finally - I'm thankful to be able to get together with my family to enjoy a wonderful meal and make some memories.  I hope that everyone else has an opportunity to do the same thing.

What were they thinking?

Tonight I was amazed at how we were treated like low-life shoplifters at a certain pet store.  This is a store where we have spent *thousands* of dollars over the last 3 years.  We were there getting Lucas's new fish tank outfitted and what a trip it was.

The Manager on duty, was lurking about, wringing his hands - and the person helping us was clearly sporting a passive aggressive attitude, all because my wife dared to challenge her "straight out of the corporate training manual" knowledge of fish selling.  Come on, are you all serious?  being like this over a guarantee for $20 worth of fish?  What?  It felt like they were watching everything we were doing.

Hell, Jeanne knows more about keeping fish, and has done so for longer than that brat has had her period!  I am still reeling but not nearly as livid as Jeanne and Lucas are.  I was tending to the Vito, and they both bore the brunt of it.  I did observe some very disturbing behavior by the store staff at the check out and Vito didn't want to meet this sales person.  He kept his distance - DOGS KNOW when someone is not quite right.

Yes it was a big box store.. Yes - letters will be written because they need to know how a misunderstanding and unacceptable behavior from staff - affect the customers.

There will be more to this story... Stay tuned.  And all of you wanting to give me their side of the story - save it.  Been there. Done it.  I'm experienced enough in business on both sides of the counter.

Fw: Personal message from Bette Mandino - Og Mandino's wife

Dear Og Team,

Please allow me to introduce myself.  Most of you have never met me, but I'm sure you've heard my name bantered about.  I'm Bette, the half of Og that remained on this planet.

During the many conversations between Dave and myself, we've discussed the challenges that so many of us are encountering during this difficult time.  I have a friend that is losing her home and will be moving into an apartment on Thanksgiving weekend.  I'm sure that was never a part of her life's dream.  Others of you are afraid of losing your jobs and medical benefits, if you are one of the fortunate that is still covered by your employer. Some of you own your own business and are watching your efforts and dreams slowly fade away as you give serious consideration to closing your doors and letting your beloved employees go.  This is the kind of stress that can put nearly unbearable pressure on you, your family and your friends during this Holiday Season.

Let me share a bit of Og with you.  I was there the night Og wrote the Ten Scrolls.  I brought coffee and snacks to him while he was in his studio pounding out these inspiring words on his IBM Selectric typewriter.  One thing you have to understand about Og's writing is that he never did it for the monetary reward.  Og was born to write!  This had been instilled in him from birth by his loving Irish mother.  It just took him many years to achieve that prediction because he was too busy "making money" and messing up his life and relationships through the abuse of alcohol.  Og would be the first to tell you that he messed up big time!  He never tried to hide his failure from the public but he was definitely not proud of it.  It was just a fact of his life that he felt you needed to know to better understand his work and where it was coming from -- his heart!

The fame of Og Mandino came because he was able to write from his heart and touch the soul of others.  He struggled with every word that was put on paper because each and every word he wrote had to be meaningful in helping others to overcome the failures and unhappiness in their lives.  He truly believed that we all have the right to succeed, be happy, be loved and love.

Og made the decision to turn his life around and become what his mother had always dreamed for  her first child.  Before this could happen he had to part company with his crutch, alcohol.  It was not easy and it was painful to watch, but he did succeed and took his pride of accomplishment with him to his grave.  He didn't accomplish anything that all of you can't do with determination, guidance and love.  When Og wrote these words -- "I will greet this day with love in my heart" -- he was telling you the way he faced each and every day of his life.  His love for his God, his family, his fans, and his career was the force that kept the man going.  He had truly experienced the phrase "Today I begin a new life."  How blessed I am to have been a part of that new life.

It is in the same spirit, that of love, I come to you today.  This is an extremely difficult time in our history and I truly believe that we need Og's words more than ever to get us over our personal hurdles.  It is my wish for this Holiday Season to be a time of change -- change in our personal lives and relationships, change to improve our careers and to bring peace to our hearts.  Change to truly allow us to live with love in our hearts!

In one of my discussions with Dave, I asked what he felt we could do to help all of you achieve this change and peacefulness that you so deserve.  Also, something that you might wish to share with family and friends that are so meaningful to you.  It had to be real, like Og.  Something all of you could afford and something you felt would be of value to you and yours.  Once again, Dave rose to the occasion and came up with the solution.  My sincerest hope is that you will benefit greatly from this special holiday gift package and will want to share it with others.

Tell_me_more_about_gift_pkg.jpg

On that note, I wish you all the happiest, merriest, most peaceful Holiday Season of your life.  My wish is that someday we will meet and be able to talk, one-on-one.  Until that day ----

        Hugs and prayers,

        Bette Mandino

P.S.  Please forward this to a friend or family member if you believe they will also benefit from this special offer to you.
